For this project, I designed a book cover for The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant. I wanted the visual to reflect the emotional depth and unexpected twist in the story. The cover features a vintage-style painting of a woman wearing a bright red necklace, which is shown as if it’s been shattered. This broken effect symbolizes the main character’s fractured dreams and the illusion of wealth that plays a key role in the plot.
The use of bold red draws attention and adds contrast, while the shattered necklace instantly creates a sense of drama and mystery. Together, these elements help capture the tone of the story and invite readers in with a powerful first impression. The design is both elegant and expressive, staying true to the story’s themes while giving it a modern visual identity.

I began by exploring the story’s themes and emotional tone. The idea of a shattered red necklace stood out as a powerful symbol of the character’s broken dreams and the story’s twist.
Using a vintage painting, I edited the image in Photoshop to add a dramatic shattered effect to the necklace. This helped tie the visual directly to the narrative.
I selected classic, elegant typography to reflect the story’s tone and arranged the layout for clarity and balance. The final design captures both the mood and meaning of the story at a glance.

Title
"The Necklace" - I used the elegant Adventures Unlimited Script font for the title, which adds timeless charm and complements the vintage painting, setting the perfect tone for the story.
Author's name
For the author's name, I selected PT Sans Narrow font, providing balanced contrast to the title font and ensuring clarity and readability while maintaining a cohesive look.
Front color design
I created a vector illustration of the red necklace to highlight its importance in the story. This design element connects the front and back covers.
